Canadian Premiere! Alan Duarte was born, and lives, in the notorious favela community of Complexo do Alemão in Rio de Janeiro. The community lacks many basic facilities, such as sanitation and endures shoot outs between police and armed drug traffickers on a daily basis. Alan’s family has been deeply affected by the conflict in the community and he has lost nine close family members to gun violence. Alan tried to define a different future for himself and he found salvation and hope through boxing. However, when his brother was killed in front of him, he decided that wasn’t enough and he began his own boxing gym. He calls it ‘Embracing Champions’. Without funding and with huge passion he works to try and save others and to create both a better future and a better community for his son. Portuguese with English subtitles.
THE GOOD FIGHT recently had its world premiere at Tribeca Film festival, where it also picked up the award for Best Short Documentary. In awarding the prize, the Tribeca Jury said “This is an unflinching portrait of finding hope in a world of danger; a journey of perseverance in the face of tragedy; an uplifting and visually compelling story of redemption.”
