Edmonton Premiere!  The infectious joy of a long childhood summer is brilliantly and boldly brought to life in Sean Baker’s newest film THE FLORIDA PROJECT. Poverty, innocence, and the comic nature of children drive this ultimately heartbreaking social drama set amongst a backdrop of novelty budget motels near Walt Disney World in Orlando. Six-year-old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince) and her mother Halley (Bria Vinaite) are living in one of these motels and are a portrait of the resilience and despair of lower-class America. The harsh reality that Moonee and her mother live in contrasts of the film’s vibrant setting and visual identity, as the verisimilitude of destitution and disparity is lost on the children too young to recognize, or care, that they are living beneath the poverty line. Willem Dafoe co-stars as Bobby, the motel manager who inextricably becomes a father figure to both Halley and Monee. THE FLORIDA PROJECT premiered earlier this year to great critical acclaim in Cannes and is surefire Oscar-contender as drama, humour, and heartbreak combine to create a vivid film about the lives of Americans not often observed and presented in film.

About the Director:
Sean Baker has made a name for himself by capturing memorable and vivid performances from non-traditional actors, especially when portraying stories about survival in lower-class America. This combination of unknown actors and unglamourous American stories is seen throughout Baker’s filmography, be it the transgender prostitutes and cab drivers in TANGERINE (2014), or the illegal Chinese immigrants operating a restaurant in TAKE OUT (2004), and most recently with the young mother and daughter living in a motel in THE FLORIDA PROJECT (2017).
