Edmonton Premiere! Spanning over a decade from the early 1950s through to the mid-60s, NOVITIATE is about the emotional and spiritual complexity of a young woman, Cathleen (Margaret Qualley) pursuing her vocation as a nun. As she progresses from the postulant to the novitiate stage of training, she finds her faith repeatedly confronted and challenged by the harsh, often inhumane realities of being a servant of God. Cathleen finds herself struggling with issues of faith, sexuality, and recent changes in life of the Church. Melissa Leo co-stars as the vicious Reverend Mother, whose authority becomes challenged as the Catholic Church progresses through the 20th century.

About the Director: Magaret Betts has helmed the documentary THE CARRIER (2010) about the AIDS epidemic. She also led a short-film collaboration with designer Prabal Gurung called ENGRAM (2013). NOVITIATE is her first feature film, which she is credited with as both writer and director.
