Edmonton Premiere! LEVIATHAN (2014) director Andrey Zvyagintsev has reunited with writer Oleg Negin for another inscrutable portrait of life during a dour Russian winter. This film revolves around the disappearance of Ayosha (Matvey Novikov) who is the child of a deeply unhappy couple Zhenya (Maryana Spivak) and Boris (Alexey Rozin). The search for Ayosha takes us through trademark Zvyagintsev imagery, combining the pessimistic with the pristine, that frames crumbling architecture and leafless winter landscapes as commentary of the decay within the people, places and events in LOVELESS. The title, LOVELESS, alone suggests of the reality in which this this movie takes place, as well as how the movie navigates its audience through the bleak narrative. Russian with English subtitles.

About the Director:
Andrey Zvyagintsev continues to examine his home country of Russia, as he had done in past films like THE RETURN (2003), THE BANISHMENT (2007), ELENA (2010) and LEVIATHAN (2014). Zvyagintsev has earned the title of being one of Russia’s most recognizable cinematic voices, with assistance from refined relationships with writer Oleg Negin and cinematographer Mikhail Krichman.
