Edmonton Premiere! Epic in scope and urgent in message, Ai Weiwei’s first feature length documentary tackles the enormity of the current refugee crisis. What makes Human Flow so powerful is how it bends traditional documentary narratives by adding Weiwei’s artistic sensibilities to portray how serious the calamity of the international refugee crisis has become. Shot in 23 countries, with 25 film crews, the size of the the production is necessary to communicate Weiwei’s message that the refugee crisis affects all humans. Poetry, stunning imagery and gentle humour are immersed within the stark reality of human suffering shown, reassuring that there is still humanity in the midst of disaster.

About the Director: The limits of Ai Weiwei artistic impact is certainly not built on convention. He has immersed his political activism into his art, bravely fought an authoritarian regime, and consistently defends freedom of expression, which in turn has rendered him not just an important Chinese figure but an important global figure. His most notable artistic achievements are his massive art installation SUNFLOWER SEEDS and his collaborative effort with the renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron on the Beijing National Stadium.
