Directors : JR and Agnès Varda| 90-mins. | France/USA | 2017 | Documentary | TRAILER

Edmonton Premiere! Renowned artists Agnès Varda and JR pair together to bring us a unique visual document exploring the relationship between people and places in rural France. Varda, at 89 years of age, has built a unique art career that focuses on documentary realism, feminist issues, and social commentary with a distinct experimental style through multiple mediums. JR, 34 years old, rose to prominence by his use of large scale open-air photo galleries on the the streets of Paris. The pair take their artistic projects on the road to create this collaborative documentary that is as much a personal reflection on identity and friendship as it is visual statement on the power of, unsurprisingly, faces and places. FACES PLACES won the Golden Eye Documentary Prize at Cannes earlier this year.

About the Directors:
French photographer Agnès Varda was one of the few successful female directors in 1950s France, her film, POINTE COURTE (1954), was a precursor of the French New Wave films of the 1960s. Varda has directed acclaimed films throughout her life, such as ONE HUNDRED AND ONE NIGHT (1995) and KUNG FU MASTER (1988), and considerers her latest documentary film FACES PLACES (2017) to be her last due to her dwindling health. JR, who found success as a street artist by combining photographic composition with graffiti art sensibilities, is developing a burgeoning documentary filmmaker career and has collaborated with the likes of Darren Aronofsky for an art installation at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris.
