DEAR KATE is part of the STUDIO A: Programme 2 short film package… presented with the generous support of ACTRA!

Director: Ilona Elizabeth McCrea | 14:37 | Calgary | 2016 | Drama
Alberta Premiere! Lorna’s attempt to reach out to her estranged daughter reveals some stark truths, in this drama about a retired vocalist who finds comfort and companionship through memories.

About the Director:
Holding degrees in Journalism and Creative Writing from the University of London, Ilona Elizabeth McCrea went on to study directing and acting at the William Esper Studio in New York. With a strong interest in storytelling and the human condition, Ilona has worked with numerous news agencies and production companies that share this focus. While working with a human rights NGO in India, Ilona filmed her independent documentary, EMERGING FROM THE SHADOW OF MANU. Having debuted at the Herland Film Festival, the piece centres on a group of girls working to escape the country’s caste system. DEAR KATE is Ilona’s short film directorial debut.

Director’s Statement:
DEAR KATE challenges us to take a deeper look at ourselves, our relationships and the importance of communication. It aims to question society’s perceptions on aging; through Lorna’s story (our protagonist), and the actions of her daughter Kate. By journeying with Lorna, I wanted to give the audience a juxtaposition between a rich, full life and a present reality that feels stagnant and isolated. Through her nostalgia, Lorna tries to attest to her worth; as a woman and ad a human being. In her plea we come to see her regrets, her struggle to accept her current reality and her need to feel loved and wanted, again.”
