Our juries and programming committees have met and made their decisions. It’s unanimous that the quality of short films submitted to EIFF has been improving by leaps and bounds over the years. We’re so proud of each and every one of you who sent us your ‘baby’ and sad that we couldn’t screen every one of them but then we’d be a 30-day festival! Organizers encourage audiences to come out and support these short filmmakers as many of them will be making the trek to Edmonton and will be participating in a Q&A following their screenings. And you know, they just might make a feature film one day!

Our Own Backyard - Sunday, September 30 from 10am to 11pm at Metro Cinema.
We are proud to present a full day of programming produced by Albertans! This is a first-time venture for EIFF, so please bear with us if there are ‘kinks’ in the day’s line-up. Our plan is this… we’ve created ten (10) packages of films that are 45- to 50-minutes in length. Following each package, the always-fabulous Mark Scholz will introduce attending filmmakers and moderate a brief Q&A with audiences. This is your chance to see, and experience, movies being made right here in our own backyard. Tickets are just $10 (cash only) at the door, and you are free to come and go throughout the day. Reel Deal and 6-pack passes can be used at the Our Own Backyard screenings.

Showcasing the best of youth filmmaking, the touring Reel Youth Film Festival is a surprisingly insightful and entertaining series of shorts made by youth 19 years and younger. The films are gathered from innovative new filmmakers from across Canada, US and beyond. This year’s films range from a bitter-sweet documentary on a group of young street kids in India, to hilarious schoolyard duals, to a touching expose on happiness. The program is made up of 18 short films, with an average of four minutes each in length.

Shorts for Young People are three (3) short film packages created for the young, and young at heart! These films appeal to everyone and are a wonderful way to introduce young people to stories made outside of the Hollywood ‘system’. All the films screening in these youth packages were chosen by our ‘Youth Jury’ comprised of Edmontonians aged 10 to 15. Please note that a few films have English subtitles. Some filmmakers may be in attendance.

Shorts on the Edge is made up of two (2) short film packages that are ‘edgier’ fascinating, yet some people might find the content a bit disturbing. We watched these with our Short Film Jury and felt that audiences need to know ahead of time that a lot of these films might stick with you for a very long time. And THAT is what great filmmaking is all about, isn’t it? Films programmed in Shorts on the Edge are in competition for:
Frame 30 Productions Award for Best Alberta Short.
Kodak Canada Award for Best Canadian Short.
Parcom Marketing Award for Best International Short.
