Director (1st feature): P. Patrick Hogan
14UP! Saturday, Oct. 6 @ 4pm in Garneau Theatre
CANADIAN PREMIERE. Andy Venable (the terrific Phillip Vaden) is nineteen, works for his dad in the warehouse of an appliance store during the day, and plays drums in a lousy heavy-metal band at night. Trapped in a lower-middle class family with three sisters, Andy doesn't really have any plans for the rest of his life, but he does know this: his mother (Julie Hagerty), a devout Catholic, is dying, and he'll do whatever it takes to make her dream come true to visit the Vatican and meet the Pope before she dies. Of course, he first has to figure out where the Vatican is, and how he's going to raise the money to get her there. But while he's got that on his plate, he’s also dealing with a father (Stephen Tobolowsky) who’s harassing him about his future, falling in love with a girl who's totally out of his league (the luminous Marnette Patterson), being a friend to his delusional best friend (The Riches Noel Fisher) and deciding if he's willing to risk it all in order to pursue his true passion. In the tradition of Garden State, Pope Dreams is a coming of age drama about growing up, falling in love, and discovering that the path to becoming an adult isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
