Longtime festival goer and volunteer, Denele Rooke, sat down to scribble out a piece of her mind, and tell us about her experiences with the festival. We hope her story inspires you to join the fun and help EIFF out!
Oh autumn. It brings the return of backpack burdened students, crunchy leaves under your feet, and that enticing smell of fresh buttered popcorn. Or at least, that’s how it is for me, a returning volunteer with the Edmonton International Film Festival.
My experiences four years ago when I discovered EIFF will always be memorable. I learned how intensely moved a person can be by a short film. That it is possible to watch three movies in a row and still be eager for more. And the intense desire to make a change in the world after watching a riveting documentary. The best part was meeting others who feel just as passionately about films as I do.
After that first year, I knew I wanted to give back to this terrific organization that had affected me so much. Octobers will never be the same without a fast paced week of ticket selling, movie watching, after parties, and Lunch Box shorts.
Taking that small step from film goer to EIFF volunteer has shown me how valuable the Edmonton International Film Festival is to the Edmonton arts community. I have experienced the heartwarming connections between directors and audiences at Q&As. Felt the pride of a successful opening night after working together with fellow volunteers and festival organizers to make it happen. And I have been inspired by the intense passion and dedication from participating teams in the 24/One Competition.
I am so excited to see what the festival has planned for this year. I look forward to the thrill of opening the new program and eagerly searching for my favourite directors and actors. There is also the pleasant surprise when taking a chance on an unknown film and being completely blown away. And of course, the welcoming sense of community that comes from Kerrie Long, the Edmonton International Film Festival organizers, and my fellow volunteers.
Would you like to be inspired by EIFF like I have? Consider volunteering and enjoy the experience with us! There is still time to apply!
I hope to see you on opening night!
There you have it folks! A first hand account of what life as a volunteer with EIFF is like. Sounds pretty great doesn't it? Full of nice smells and nice people. And don't forget all the inspiration! As a volunteer for EIFF you get to be a part of the magic happening behind the scenes and you still get to view as many films as your little heart desires.
If you want to be a part of our family, and we hope that you do, then apply, apply, apply!
