My name is Olivia Fung and I'm part of this year's Social Media Team for the EIFF. I'm also pretty new to the Film Festival scene in which I get the sheer pleasure of experiencing it for the first time in Edmonton. As a first time festival attendee but a veteran film lover, nothing thrills me more than getting to experience the vast array of independent filmakers our local community embraces. And there is a lot. A lot of talented people that come together in the works to generate a piece of medium that critiques upon relationship values (Sex after Kids), brings us back into time where music defined a generation of pop culture (Good Ol'Freda), revels in two extreme pscyhological existences (Lawrence and Holloman) and tests the power of the human soul (The Good Son).
Despite that the event itself has broaden my knowledge base on the amount of great independent films out there, the festival has also managed to achieve a more important facet of going to the movies: fun. With the after-party events, Q&A sessions, and competitions, EIFF really knows how to bring out the eccentric animals in every artist. And you know what's even more outrageous? Is how connected our local community is to that ritzier facet of movie business called Hollywood. Last night, I got the chance of encountering fellow Edmontonian, Al Ford, who fought with Ray Mancini back in '81, who is also personal friends with Mickey Rourke! Crazy no?!
