ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Just a couple hours drive from the glorious Rocky Mountains, Edmonton is known for its big sky and endless sunshine. Located east of Vancouver and west of Toronto, Edmonton is in the heart of the Canadian Prairies and our city is often called upon to be the set for independent and Hollywood movies. With a population of one million people, Edmonton is a city that loves movies. It's reported that the number one, per capita, movie rental city in Canada is Edmonton. Need we say more? Oh yes, and we have the world's largest shopping mall -- West Edmonton Mall.
For nine days each autumn, Edmontonians feast on all things cinematic. It's a veritable buffet of fantastic, independent films from around the globe. Whatever the genre, EIFF programmers search the world over for the most highly entertaining films that exhibit great storytelling qualities. Our schedule includes 65 feature-length slots and 110 shorts programmed into 15 packages.
EIFF encourages all filmmakers whose films have been selected, along with films we've solicited, to attend the festival. Over the years, we've had the pleasure of hosting John Waters, Norman Jewison, Deepa Mehta, Jorgen Leth, Arthur Hiller, Anne Wheeler, Werner Herzog, Don McKellar and more.
FILM PROGRAMMING STRANDS
The Edmonton International Film Festival showcases the finest filmmaking in these programming streams, which include films submitted and solicited.
Contemporary Independents. The very best in contemporary independent cinema from our neighbours to the south -- from pitch-black comedies, to nail-biting thrillers, to heart-wrenching drama... you name it. This is the cream of the crop of American Indie Cinema.
International Shorts. The cornerstone of this Festival! This series combines juried films, solicited films and visiting filmmakers for screenings that are akin to ridin' the rollercoaster at West Edmonton Mall. All short film submissions must be 20-minutes or less (including credits).
Oh, Canada! Made in our own land of maple syrup and toques, these films salute the work produced by Canadian filmmakers. All films in this strand are in competition for the Citytv Canadian Feature Award, chosen by audiences during the festival.
Our Own Backyard. A celebration of the finest filmmaking created by Albertans, and people who grew up here, this programming stream includes films of all lengths -- shorts, medium-length and features.
World Cinema. We search the globe for the very best in independent, international filmmaking. These are the best independent, juried films culled from submissions and curated by our programming committees from the international film circuit. |

This is a festival with a rich history and a loyal following of thousands that continues to grow with each passing year. Previously branded ‘Local Heroes’, festivities took place each March. Known as the Edmonton International Film Festival since 2004, and moved to a new autumn timeslot when Mother Nature is much kinder the festival is now in-line with the existing Canadian film circuit, making accessibility to films (and filmmakers)a whole lot easier.
All film festivals are in heavy competition with each other to woo the world’s top filmmakers to their event and Edmonton is no exception. So we’ve decided to do it one filmmaker at a time. Over the years we’ve brought in John Waters, Norman Jewison, Arthur Hiller, Werner Herzog, Don McKellar, Jorgen Leth and Deepa Mehta to name a few. Over twenty-five short filmmakers visit the festival annually as well. And the comment we hear most often is that ours is among the warmest, friendliest, best-organized film festivals they’ve ever attended. EIFF organizers are committed to making each and every guest filmmaker -- whether they’re presenting a feature-length film or a short -- feel like gold. And it’s working.
Whatever the genre, we search the world over for the most highly entertaining films that exhibit great storytelling qualities.
